George Bannerman Dealey (1859–1946)George Bannerman Dealey was a distinguished Dallas businessman, publisher, and civic leader whose vision and dedication helped shape the city’s cultural and economic landscape. Born on September 18, 1859, Dealey devoted much of his life to public service and community development. As the longtime publisher of The Dallas Morning News and owner of the A.H. Belo Corporation, Dealey championed journalistic integrity and civic responsibility. His leadership extended beyond the press; he played an instrumental role in establishing Southern Methodist University and was a key advocate for bringing a Federal Reserve branch to Dallas—both of which contributed significantly to the city’s growth and prominence. In recognition of his contributions, Dealey Plaza was named in his honor in 1934. The plaza became internationally known following the tragic assassination of President John F. Kennedy there on November 22, 1963. Today, George Bannerman Dealey Montessori and International Academy, located in the Preston Royal area of North Dallas, continues his legacy of educational excellence, leadership, and service to the community. |
